Gomti Nagar is one of Lucknow's largest and most sought-after neighbourhoods. It sits on the eastern bank of the Gomti river, with planned colonies, big parks, offices and malls. If you are new to the city, here is how to make sense of it.
How Gomti Nagar is laid out
The area is divided into khands, almost all with names starting with "V":
- Phase I includes khands such as Vibhuti Khand, Vikas Khand and Vijay Khand. Vibhuti Khand is the commercial hub, with offices, banks and hotels.
- Phase II includes khands such as Vikrant Khand and Virat Khand.
- Gomti Nagar Extension, further east towards Shaheed Path, has numbered sectors, wider roads and newer apartment buildings. It is still filling in.
Knowing the khand matters. Rents, building age and how quiet a street is can change a lot from one khand to the next.
What is nearby
- Parks: Janeshwar Mishra Park, one of the largest city parks in Asia at about 376 acres, Ambedkar Memorial Park, and Ram Manohar Lohia Park. Many colonies are built around smaller parks.
- Riverfront: a stretch of walkways along the Gomti.
- Offices: regional offices of banks, government bodies and companies, which is why many professionals rent here.
- Education: Amity University Lucknow and Jaipuria Institute of Management are in the wider area, along with many schools.
- Transport: Gomti Nagar railway station, and the main roads towards Faizabad Road and Shaheed Path.

- Office-goers working in Vibhuti Khand or nearby.
- Families who want planned colonies, parks and schools.
- Students of the institutions on this side of the city, often in shared flats in Gomti Nagar Extension.
What to check before renting here
- Which khand or sector, and how far it is from your office or college at rush hour.
- Water supply and power backup, especially in the newer Extension buildings.
- Parking, which is tight in older khands.
- Building age. Older independent houses offer more space; newer apartments offer lifts and security.
- Commercial noise if the house faces a main road or market.
