Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport at Amausi is Lucknow's gateway, and it is in the middle of a long expansion. Terminal 3 is already open, and much bigger plans are on paper. Here is what is known, and what it means for the neighbourhoods around it.
Terminal 3: open since 2024
The new Terminal 3 was inaugurated in March 2024. Its first phase was built for about 8 million passengers a year. The airport is run by Adani Airports, which said it had already spent about ₹2,401 crore on the new terminal and road improvements.
The expansion plan
Reports give these figures, which differ a little between sources:
- Phase 2 of Terminal 3, planned for 2026 to 2027 with about ₹900 crore more, would lift capacity to roughly 13 to 14 million passengers a year.
- Adani Airports announced an overall plan of about ₹10,000 crore to expand and modernise the airport.
- The long-term master plan aims at about 38 million passengers a year by 2047 to 2048. A September 2026 report puts the target at 39 million.
Treat the later phases as plans, not dates. Airport expansions depend on traffic growth, approvals and funding.
Getting there
- The airport is the first stop on the Lucknow Metro Red Line, which runs to Charbagh, Hazratganj and on to Munshi Pulia in Indira Nagar.
- The new Lucknow-Kanpur (Awadh) Expressway has elevated sections near Amausi and starts close to Shaheed Path.
What it means for nearby areas
Airports create jobs: airline and ground staff, hotels, cargo and logistics, and taxis. Areas close to the airport, such as Amausi, Sarojini Nagar, Krishna Nagar, Transport Nagar and Ashiyana, are practical homes for people who work there, especially on early or late shifts.
If you are renting near the airport:
- Check aircraft noise at the times you will be home. It varies a lot from street to street.
- Ask about the commute by metro. Being near Amausi, Transport Nagar or Krishna Nagar stations makes the city centre easy to reach.
- Look at the approach road. Some lanes near the highway carry heavy traffic.
